Last week we were lucky enough to visit Cappadocia in the snow and it was just as magical as I dreamt it would be. We have been there in every other season but this was by far the most beautiful.
We were there for 6 days, 5 nights and during that time stayed at 4 different hotels. All of which I will blog about but first up, lets revisit one of my favourites: Taşkonaklar hotel.
There are 2 main areas to stay in Cappadocia. The most popular is Goreme which is the main town, and the other area is called Uchisar which is where Taşkonaklar hotel is located. When we arrived it was snowing heavily and all the flights to Cappadocia had been canceled, we were so lucky that we managed to sneak on in before the snow storm began. We were warmly welcomed by Jo, the friendly manager (and fellow Brit!) She checked us in and showed us around our new home for the next 2 days. Carefully restored using local materials, it was the perfect mix of charm, luxury and comfort…
Our room (101) was the Royal King Suite one of the nicest i’ve stayed in. It was warm, cozy, spacious and beautifully furnished with an open fire and the most comfortable bed.
It felt more like an apartment than a hotel room to be honest…with a hallway, lounge area with a sofa and a flat screen tv (which we actually didn’t turn on once!) a bedroom area and a bathroom with the biggest shower I think i’ve ever seen.
One of the best things about our room was the balcony. It was so big that it was split into 3 sections; upper, middle and lower.
In the lower section you had stunning views over Pigeon Valley and in the middle section you basically had the pièce de résistance of the room – the jacuzzi. The insta-famous jacuzzi that I have seen in so many photos and I finally got to jump in it myself!
One of the highlights of staying at this hotel is their breakfast. Honestly, you’re in for a treat! Tea, coffee, cheeses, olives, pastries, cake, jams and all different kinds of eggs (my favourite being sucuk yumurta which is eggs with a type of sausage)
Everyday the chef makes something different, on our first morning it was börek pastry and on our second it was pancakes with strawberries.
Taskonaklar has a great location at the top of Uchisar hill which provides wonderful views over Pigeon Valley and is within walking distance to the castle (which is well worth a visit for amazing panoramic views over the whole area) markets and restaurants.
On our first day it didn’t stop snowing for a second and we enjoyed some lovely walks in the snow around the hillside village which is full of gorgeous rock houses and fairy chimneys which we had fun exploring.
Evenings were spent by the log fire with a glass of red wine and of course chilly dips in the jacuzzi whilst it snowed.
We were very happy to wake up to beautiful blue skies on our second morning so wasted no time in grabbing the camera and running to our balcony….everything looked so different and even more beautiful when the sun was shining on the snowy landscape below.
It was a short stay before it was time to move to the next hotel but a few highlights from our time at Taskonaklar hotel were…jumping in the hot tub at 10pm when it was -14 degrees outside and star gazing then walking barefoot in the snow back to the room, cozy evenings drinking our favourite red wine by the fire, midnight adventures around a very snowy and deserted Uçhisar, savouring cups of hot tea by the open window when it was heavily snowing outside, waking up to a heavenly breakfast….
Thanks for the great stay, see you soon!
